Golf At Chechessee

A Golf Course of Traditional Character

The Course

Our goal at Chechessee was to create a golf course of traditional character that would reward thoughtful, imaginative and precise play; while utilizing and showcasing the magnificent oaks and pines of the Carolina Low Country.

We hope that the nuances of the course will reveal themselves over time, encouraging players to attempt a variety of shots and strategies to discover how best to reward their individual game.

Most of all, we hope that you enjoy your golf at this fine club with which we are honored to be associated.

Hole 1 Par 4

A great opening hole! The stage is set for the entire course by the great trees and this uniquely designed green. Drive the ball up the left center to avoid the large oak tree that gaurds the right side of the green. Be careful with your approach to this small, raised green.

Hole 2 Par 3

A medium length Par 3 with bunkers on both sides of the green. If you miss the green left, you will have a difficult pitch as the green runs away from you. Make your misses short of the green.

Hole 3 Par 4

A short Par 4 with trouble on both sides of the fairway. A row of bunkers guards the left side of the fairway, while a dry creek runs down the entire right side. Approach shots must be precise to this small, bunkerless green. Most shots to the right of the green will find the creek.

Hole 4 Par 4

Don’t let the open appearance fool you. A drive to the right will find the rough and possibly one of the small bunkers. The long, narrow green opens up better from the left side of the fairway. It’s best to avoid the two bunkers on the right.

Hole 5 Par 5

Reachable Par 5 with two solid shots. You must make a decision with your second shot: go for it or lay back. Avoid the hazard on the left. If you go for the green, make your miss to the right.

Hole 6 Par 4

Now the course begins to show its teeth. You get the first view of the Chechessee Creek. Keep your drive straight and long: you’ll need it. The approach plays slightly uphill to a well-bunkered green. Aim to the middle of the green and putt to the edges.

Hole 7 Par 3

A beautiful Par 3 that parallels a creek. Don’t let the bunkers in the hill influence your club selection; they make the green appear closer than it is. Any shot landing on the front of this back-to-front sloping green will not stay there.

Hole 8 Par 4

A devil of a hole with bunkers everywhere. The bunker on the right side is reachable, so play left of it or lay back. The cross bunker short of the green must be cleared in order to get to the green. The green is long and narrow with deep bunkers on each side.

Hole 9 Par 4

Chechessee’s longest Par 4 requires two well-struck shots to reach the green. Favor the left side off the tee, avoiding the crooked pine on the right and the bunker behind it. The bunkers leading up to the green should not come into play. This very large green requires that your approach be close to the hole.

Hole 10 Par 5

Another reachable Par 5. The second shot will play slightly uphill and typically into the wind. The fairway opens up on the right side for your lay-up. The green is small, but will be defended by deep bunkers on each side.

Hole 11 Par 3

A wonderful downhill Par 3. Trouble is everywhere around this large green, with bunkers and wetland on both sides. The green slopes from back to front and has a lot of movement in the middle. Don’t go long.

Hole 12 Par 4

A short par 4 that plays much harder than the card suggests. The 165 yard carry over the marsh leaves a relatively short approach. A small bunker bisects the front of the green and there is a false front on either side of it. Have the right yardage—missing this green is trouble.

Hole 13 Par 3

Hole 14 Par 4

This hole turns subtly to the right with a large bunker straight through the fairway. The difficulty lies in the raised green with a large false front. The green also falls off severely on both sides. Missing the green will almost certainly result in a bogey.

Hole 15 Par 5

Chechessee’s longest hole requires a straight drive, then you must decide where to place your next shot. A large bunker on the right, in the second shot landing area, forces you to aim left, leaving you facing two large oaks that guard the entrance to the green. The fairly flat green is not guarded by any bunkers.

Hole 16 Par 3

The longest Par 3 requires a well-struck shot in order to reach the green. The green is guarded by two deep bunkers on the left, but allows a generous chipping area on the right. Just hitting the green does not insure a two-putt as you are on the largest green on the course.

Hole 17 Par 4

This short Par 4 certainly tests your courage. You can either drive over the hazard, a carry of 245 yards, or lay your ball out to the left, leaving a longer approach. The narrow green is protected on the right by two deep bunkers, but offers a generous bail-out area to the left.

With the clubhouse in sight, your work is not done. Make sure to position your drive in the right center of the fairway in order to avoid the overhanging oaks on the left. Pick the right club for your approach to this demanding green. Bunkers guard both sides of the green.
